My daughter plays 8U softball. We had our last game of the season and we ended up having to play against an coach. It never ends well when the coach starts the game by walking up to the ref and saying "I heard about you before..." To which our ref replied "You too. I heard you were a II

Every play is being questioned once play starts. Its getting out of hand. Well we make it to the last inning and the old rule book (which had been changed at the start of this season) was what he was going by. This year, they implemented a 5 run inning per team. The ump called the other team off the field when they got 5 runs in the top of the last inning. These 5 innings tied

the game. Our girls take the field and he storms out. He is in our umpires face (which is a woman no less) and screaming that wasnt the rules. She calmly explained that the rules were changed. He demanded that his girls take the field and continue play. After more nos back and forth, She put her hand up and ejected him from

the game. He wasnt having any of that and the screaming got worse. Needless to say, parents are upset. See, 8U teams score doesnt matter and all teams play the tournament. Parents are screaming to let them play. Finally, one parent on this irate coaches team walks up and pulls her three kids from the field.

They get in their car and leave. After seeing this, the umpire walked out past home plate and waved her arms in the air signaling the game was over. She said loudly, game ends in forfeit. That coach is up again screaming why? She looked at him and said, "Rulebook states teams must have a minimum of eight players.

You have seven. Also, those players left. Roster changes mid game MUST be approved by an umpire or the game must be forfeited. There are two reasons. Your team loses by forfeit." He starts screaming that the game ended in a tie so its just a tie. She said "no, its a loss. Remove your team. from the field. I am going to have a hot dog."

theenigma31680 OP. Yeah, she is a no nonsense, take no kinda person. They always give leftover concession food away, so it probably wasnt meant to come across like that, but if it wasnt a classic style roast!

GreenEggPage I don't envy those refs...

theenigma31680 OP. We pass the hat and take donations to help pay the ref. She made a grand total of $15.50 Not worth the trouble to me. But it is a thankless job.

IncorrigibleAssface. I don't understand these parents/coaches who get so irate for children's sports. They aren't getting paid for it, they aren't losing money when a game is lost, why all the rage over a children's game?

theenigma31680 OP. Well, some games matter. Some games can mean position in later tournaments and such. But the 8U level doesnt matter. They keep track of scores just for record keeping but they dont matter. They dont matter so much that they dont even post scores on the scoreboard.

I was a coach for basketball elementary league once and the only time i got like that was when the other team was physically hurting my team and wasnt getting called for it. I mean an occasional foul is one thing, but i had a player come back crying with a handprint across the arm and we got the

foul called on us. I had pulled five players for injuries and only had 11 players on my team. Sometimes a coach has to stick up for their team, but at the right times. He was even proven to be in the wrong and still pressed the issue.

Other coaches arent the same. Our 12U team plays high school level rules. One game the umpire called Infield Fly rule and deemed a dropped catch an out that ended the inning. Coach come out and said to the umpire "There is no infield fly rule. Never had that called against us before." He was agitated and the ump

just said "we play high school rules and its in the rulebook. You will also see that its listed as the umpires discretion to call it." Coach went ba k to the dugout and looked it up. Next inning he goes to the ump and apologized and said he didnt think it was there cause they never got called it before.

Most times coaches were civil. But the coach in my post i guess did the same thing the game before. I cant say that i would have pulled my kids and made the team lose the game, but i would have had words

with that coach if he was in charge of my kids. Kids want to play and have fun. He is teaching them to hate the game they love.
